This is a brief description of a couple of other disciplines K-9's can train for ...

USAR - Urban Search and Rescue (Disaster)

Minnesota doesn't experience many full-scale disasters, however we do see severe storms that can create disaster situations for local communities.  This discipline requires extensive training for both the handler and the K-9 due to the dangerous nature of the work.  Training such as hazmat (hazardous material), rubble and fire conditions, structural safety, proper decontamination procedures.  The K-9 must learn to work independently of the handler on the disaster pile where difficult agility situations are common.  They work without any equipment, including a collar, to avoid being caught in debris.

Article / Evidence

Article searches help Law Enforcement to locate possible clues for a missing person search or criminal event.  The K-9's are trained with a specific command to locate articles handled by humans.  They can be either scent specific (a certain person's scent) or something handled by any human being.  Conditions may dictate how long an article is viable.
