Law Enforcement Tip for December / January: Winter is finally, if slowly upon us. While missing person search calls seem to decline a little this time of year, at least in the north country like we experience here, a different type of search rears its ugly head. Ice drownings.
So far in Minnesota alone, reports of people, fish houses, ATV's and snowmobiles going through the ice are up from previous years. While many are easy rescues and recoveries, this isn't always the case. Sometimes there are no witnesses, or witness testimony isn't clear.
To help save your divers, consider calling in a SAR K-9 team to help narrow the area you have to search. The K-9's can be worked on ice around the area, or if the ice is unsafe, in a floatable craft to search where the subject might be located under water or ice.
Consider taking time to meet and work with a SAR K-9 team during your agencies ice rescue training, such as Cass County, MN puts on each year: http://www.co.cass.mn.us/sheriff/sheriff_diveteam.html
